Meet Canterbury’s Hometown Hero
The Pacific Western Brewing Company and Pacific Sport – Northern BC announce next recipient of the Hometown Heroes Program
Prince George, British Columbia – October 19, 2007 – Megan Tandy, 19 years of age, a long standing resident of Prince George, has been selected as the next recipient of the Hometown Heroes program. Megan competes in the biathlon, and has been cross country skiing at the age of 2 (two).
Megan began biathlon at the age of 12 with a volunteer organized biathlon club at Prince George’s ski trails. During her first season she attended weekly shooting practices during the winter and attended a set of races, but before she knew, she was skiing intervals and attending technique sessions. In her short career, Megan has a very impressive list of accomplishments which include:
- Represented Canada at the Biathlon Junior World Championships for two consecutive seasons with top placements of 8th (2006) and 13th (2007)
- Ended the 2006 and 2007 season as Canadian Champion after winning North American Championships.
- Named to the Canadian National Biathlon Team for two years running.
For 2008, Megan’s training season is well underway. She has recently returned from a three week training camp in Europe and is looking forward to the training and competition season ahead. Competing in the first race of the season, a summer biathlon raced on rollerskis, Megan was ranked 3rd in Canada after a 1st and 4th place finish in the open Senior Women category despite being a first year Junior Woman. Megan’s personal goal for the 2008 season is to have one top 10 finish at Junior World Championships and ultimately to represent Canada on the Biathlon World Cup circuit and in the Winter Olympic Games.
Hometown “heroes” like Megan are selected and assigned to a sponsorship region, in this case by PacificSport Northern BC. Signage in the region will feature a picture of the endorsed hero and their future goals to raise visibility and encourage local involvement. PWB will donate partial proceeds from the sales of selected PWB products to the Hometown Heroes program and to each hero directly, to pay for approved education or athletic expenses.
